Ibda’a Suspends Activities Following Tragic Loss

Ibda’a youth, Sajed Mizher, was shot and killed by the Israeli military while volunteering as a paramedic.

Bethlehem, Palestine – In the early morning hours of March 27th, clashes broke out as a result of a military invasion into Dheisheh camp. Sajed Mizer, aged 17, was volunteering as a paramedic with the Palestinian Medical Relief Team and in the midst of caring for an injured youth when he was murdered by IDF live ammunition. Family members recount that he felt that he was safe to practice first aid because he wore his medical vest, which, according to international law, should have protected him from being targeted.

Sajed was an active volunteer and member of Ibda’a’s dance troupe. He is the second martyr in a row from the Mizher family, both of whom played an active role in the Ibda’a community. Last July, Sajed’s 15 year old cousin, Arkan, was also assassinated during a raid into the camp.

As a result of this tragic loss, and in honor of those who are in mourning, Ibda’a Cultural Center has suspended all activities for the next three days. Regular programming will resume on Saturday, March 30th.

Ibda'a Cultural Center (Ibda'a) is a grassroots, community-based organization located in the Dheisheh refugee camp within occupied Palestinian Territory. Since its foundation in 1994, Ibda'a serves more than 2000 children, youth and women annually. Ibda'a’s mission is to create a positive atmosphere for children, youth and women in the refugee camp in order to assist them in developing creativity and leadership skills through a range of social, cultural and educational activities.
